We regret to record the death last Sunday of Pope

He was elected in the second year of the War and, it is difficult for Englishmen who are not members of the Roman communion to judge dispassionately of his achievement, as it was for us inseparably connected with the War. While well aware of= his high character,. his devotion! to his task and his amiability, we can hardly fail to remember that he and his predecessor alike refrained from issuing any, definite reprobation —such a reprobation as would have left the world in no doubt— of the crime Germany committed in violating Belgium.
