We much regret to record the death of Admiral of

the Fleet Sir John de Robeck. He unexpectedly succeeded Admiral Carderi (who fell ill) in command of the Dardanelles Fleet early in 1915. The great naval attack on the Straits on March 18th, 1915, was an expensive failure, but Admiral de Robeck's cool conduct when the ' Ocean,' the and the French Bouvet ' had been mined enormously added to his reputation. He clearly perceived that the forcing of the _Dardanellei was the proper work. of troops and said so: When the soldiers had landed there was 'never a day on which tiley had not to thank Admiral de Robeck and his fellow-seamed for thoughtful services and watchful protection. Admiral de Robeck was an adniirable type of naval officer— courteous, friendly, and professionally efficient.
