The Fiihrer is well aware that nothing succeeds like excess, and once he starts playing the pipe of peace the thing in his hands will become a trombone. How convenient, how apposite, will be thereafter a General Election! How inconvenient, how inapposite, will be the position and the speeches of those who hold that Herr Hitler's conception of peace is not "Peace with Honour" but "Peace with Loot." True it is that the Far Eastern situation may cast a certain chill ; true it is that the electorate might well have been stirred to combativeness by the brave music of that distant drum ; but it is quite possible that the kaleidoscope of policy may assume some different pattern before November, and that the Government may go to the country on the indisputable argument that one dove in the hand is worth two vultures in the bush.
