The style of the 'sixties

Sir: Does `Habitat' sell trivia; if not, should it? Mario Amaya's article (14 July) is misleading at least to the extent that we sell neither cardboard furniture nor anything with Union Jacks.

It is inevitable, I suppose, that we should think of our own merchandise as basic, simple, almost classic, so it is sad for us to hear it dismissed in this way. Sad too, I think, to read an article that seems out of contact with what really is happen- ing in British design for there is much that is

serious, authoritative. As an instance, we are cur- rently designing furniture, fabrics, linens, glass and ovenware and cutlery for manufacture by huge American corporations for sale in Macy and other stores in the USA. For France we are designing an elegant inexpensive range of furniture to sell through Prisunic shops. And none of it is trivia.
