The battle on which the fate of Spain, for the

present at least, depends, was raging when we went to press. Marshal Serrano was attempting to carry the lines of Samorrostro, and had appar- ently on Friday evening carried the first line of them, including, perhaps, San Pedro de Abanto. It must be maembered that these are official statements, but the Government of Madrid, knowing the „situation to be so serious, would hardly venture on misrepresentation. If Serrano carries the lines, he will raise the siege of Bilbao, and scatter the Carlists to the winds ; but if not, the war must linger till another army has been raised, and General Pavia, still in command at Madrid, will probably take some very decided step.
