In a despatch dated 15th May Herr von Bismarck: completely

throws over the Treaty of 1852, first remarking that it never bound them to any power but Denmark,because the ratifications were only exchanged between Berlin and Copenhagen, and that now they are reluctantly compelled by the great sacrifices of the war to repudiate all obligations under it even to Denmark. They have, however, the Prussian Minister remarks with reasonable pride, done more then fulfil the promise of the identical note of 31st January last by accepting the invitation to conference and then discussing with the other Powers what ought to be done. It was a rare act of condescension !
