A PLEA FOR THE SHARK.

To TEE EDITOR Or THE "SPECTATOR."] your article in the Spectator of May 14th relative to sharks you state that sharks have never been known to jump out of the sea. Well, it may interest your readers to know that

when I was serving on 'Hermes' during the Burmese War of 1851 at the entrance of the Bassein River, where we were at anchor, we amused ourselves by catching a lot of -very large sharks, and we hung them on our lower bosun ; and at night we all very distinctly saw several sharks jump out of the water at the sharks, and next day we observed a good many of the sharks had been partly eaten, some quite half way up. I could give you other instances where I have seen sharks jump out of the water, but the above will suffice,
