work was all, although in his relationships with.his children, his neighbours and above all his close scientific friends, like Hooker, he always showed himself kind and friendly.

When he died in 1882, he was buried in Westiminster Abbey. The recognitition of the world was shown in the fact that his pallbearers included the Dukes of Devonshire and Argyll, the Earl of Derby, Sir John Lubbock, the President of the Royal Society, Dean Farrar of Westminster and his beloved Hooker. He had left a mass of work on the incredibly beautiful complexities of the way nature works.

But the Origin was the high point of his life. Almost entirely unwittingly he had set off an earthquake in man's view of the universe, the tremors of which have rebounded to this day — comparable with Copernicus, Descartes and those one or two other key moments whereby man's perspective has changed from, seeing himself as the centre of a divinely-ordained, immutable frame of existence, to being merely the chance by-product of the infinite play of random forces, in an imperson0:1 black universe. But of course the irony Is that the theory of evolution by natural selection, far from destroying man's collective egotism, enormously reinforced it. As C. S. Lewis once pointed out in his paper, Is Theology Poetry?' far from destroying myth and replacing it with scientific 'reality', the idea of evolution merelY replaced one myth by another — by giving man the infinitely comforting thought that, by pure chance and dependent on nothing outside himself, he has come out top of the heap. It was perhaps the single most influential underpinning to that whole optimistic Victorian world-view, that was able to see the story of existence as a continuous climb out col darkness into the glorious light of the future. It has been reserved for our own time to recognise once again that things are not quite so simple.
