The dead-official journals have been instructed to deny, in words

very carefully selected, the rumour mentioned by us last week, that Earl Russell intended to quit the Ministry. The Earl remains, after all, Secretary for Foreign Affairs,—the most thankless post at this moment within the whole range of office. It is, we trust, as unnecessary to say that our statement was not without foundation, as to express our pleasure that the old Whig chief will continue to support a Cabinet which, without him and Mr. Gladstone, would have little right to demand the suffrages of liberal men.
