General Grant seems to have begun well. It is said

that be has given directions to his aides-de-camp to open all his letters, and directly they see the word " office" in any of them to throw that letter into the fire ; " for," says the General, "some of the applicants might really be deserving persons, and I should be sorry to be prepossessed against them by receiving from them applications of that kind."
