On Wednesday the trial of the twelve Communists :barged with

conspiracy ended in a verdict of guilty. The jury did not hesitate, and it must be clear to all who read the evidence that the jury could not have come to any other conclusion. The trial was conducted by the Judge with a fairness that took the form of showing all possible indulgence towards the prisoners. Five of them were sentenced to a year's imprisonthent _in' the second division—these men had all been convicted before—and the other seven were given the opportunity of being simply bound over. When thz,y refused this they Were sentenced to six months in the second do msioll. In no other country' would the sentences ha4c been So. lenient.
