JULIETTE'S WEEKLY FROLIC

Having extracted £100 from my colleague Skinflint's jealously guarded hoard, I have been empowered by the Editor to risk it on the horses, at my own discretion. We begin this Saturday at Newbury where the £7,550 Hennessy Gold Cup has attracted the usual high-class field. Probable favourite will be the 1970 National winner, Gay Trip, and both he and the new Lambourn star, Freddie Boy, should run a good race. I am, however, taking last year's victor, Spanish Steps, to defy his thirteen stone burden and retain the cup in the style in which he carried off the Gainsborough Chase at Sandown last Feb- ruary. Unwisely, perhaps, for if I blow the lot I'll get into trouble, I also propose a small saver of £1 each way on the improv- ing The Spaniard.

My initial investment, therefore, £5 to win Spanish Steps, £1 each way The Spaniard.
