The Conquest

SIR,—Your recent review of books on the subject of the Conquest (October 14) leads one to the inescapable conclusion that this event is now re- garded—as the authors of 1066 And All That would say—as a 'good thing.' The commemorative carry- ings-on at Hastings reinforce this view.

There is something of a parallel between the events of 1066 and 1966, and it might be suggested that we, in our present state of social, moral and economic decline, are ripe for another dose of continental expertise.
