The Truro election terminated on Thursday in the return of

the Tory candidate, but the result is, nevertheless, very un- pleasant to the Tories. At the last election Sir F. M. Williams was returned by 795 votes, against 565 given to the highest Liberal candidate, or a majority of 230 votes ; whereas on Thursday, Colonel Tremayne, the Conservative, defeated the Liberal, Mr. Willyams, by only 45. The successful candidate polled 656 votes, a loss of 139 votes, and the unsuccessful 611, a gain of 46 votes, 185 voters having changed sides. Now, on the Ministerial theory, the candidates being unusually equal in personal claims, the deep admiration of the country for their policy should have increased the Conservative vote. The loss would be unim- portant in a great borough, but Conservative strength is greatest in medium places like Truro, where county feeling is almost as predominant as in a county division.
