THE VERGER OF WESTMINSTER ABBEY.

[To THE EDITOR OF THE " SPECTATOR."] SIE,—I can vouch for the truth of the story told by your correspondents, having been a victim of the verger myself ; and upon another occasion, at the consecration of a Bishop (I forget which, but it was somewhere about the early sixties), I was commanded to leave the choir during the celebration of the Holy Communion because I refused to obey the order to "go up now." But what could be expected of the lesser officials when, at a West-country church, the parson was wont to fill the chalice from a black bottle, having previously drawn the cork while standing at the north-west corner of the altar ? And yet, at this very church, the people had never ceased to turn to the East when they recited the Creed.—I am, Sir, &c.,
