At a meeting of the Court of Common Council, yesterday,

Sir Peter Laurie moved that 1000/. should be granted for the relief of the distressed Highlanders. Mr. Anderton proposed that 5001. should be the sum; and the amendment was carried, by 64 to 62.

A petition to the House of Lords to pass the Irish Municipal Bill, was adopted at a numerous meeting of the inhabitants of Finsbury, held on Thursday night, at the Hall of Science, City Road. Colonel Thompson was cheirman of the meeting; Mr. Wakley and Mr. O'Connell were the principal speakers.

Resolutions in favour of abolishing Church-rates were carried una- nimously, at a meeting of the inhabitants of Southwark, held on Thurs- day, at the London* Bridge Tavern.

The inhabitants of Mile-end Old Town held a meeting on Monday, and petitimied Parliament to abolish Church-rutes.

The anniversary dinner of the supporters of the London Orphan Asylum took place on Wednesday, at the City of London Tavern; the Duke of 'Wellington in the chair. The amount of subscriptions was 2,6001., said to be the largest sum collected on a similar occasion. The Duke of Wellington, in departing, was loudly cheered by the people in the street. Some gentlemen residing in Peckham Rye, and the neighbourhood, assembled on Thursduy evening, to form a Protestant Association, Captain Alsuger, M. P., descanted "on the fearful ravages of Popery"

and a Mr. Cummins, with several others, talked in much the same strain. The members of the parent Protestant Association are to have their annual meeting in Exeter Hall on the 10th of May; when a Mr. i

M.Neile, and Dr. Croly are to hold forth. It s not stated whether Mr. M'Clhee is to sport any more "ingenious devices ;" but without ISPGhee and O'Sullivan, we should think " Protestants" would find the affair rather fiat. But Maria Monk, they say, is coming over from America. Let them get her by the side of Dr. Croly. She would answer the purpose of the faithful, and supply the want of "ingenious devices" with "awful" though not over-delicate "disclosures" for the excitement of the ladies.
