COMMUNITY BACH

SIR,--Mr. Martin Cooper suggests that the audience of Bach's Passion music might participate next year in the chorales. Admittedly a large proportion of the audience is familiar with them, and with the aid of a rehearsal or two, as he suggests, a result might be produced which would be satisfactory as well as satisfying. All the same I object strongly. It is difficult to get a seat for the performances and they are few and far between. This makes it imperative that every member of the audience must be as sure of a perfect hearing as possible. But it might be the lot of a musical member of the audience to be placed next to an enthusiastic participant whose voice and rendering would painfully fall short of the requisite standard.—Yours faithfully.
