The Daily Chronicle of Thursday tells an excellent story of

Abraham Lincoln a propos of the suggestion so often made by the Kaiser that his chief and most powerful ally is God, and that He has always been on the German aide. During the darkest hours of the Civil War Lincoln wee asked whether he was sure that God was on "our side." Lincoln's reply was perfect : "I do not know ; I have not thought about that. But I am very anxious to know whether we are on God's side."
