WOMAN

[To the Editor of the SPECTATOR.] SIR,—Apropos of your verse competition for an epigram on " Woman," I am venturing to pass on the late General Horace Porter's close of his response to the toast, " The Ladies " : " Woman, the conundrum of the Nineteenth Century 1 We cannot guess her but we will never give her up."

[Was it not. Mr. Choate who gave the same toast in these words : " The ladies I Once our superiors, now our equals " ? —En. Spectator.]
