Danger—men not at work

Sir: I hope the ideas put forward in Mr Jain Stewart's excellent article (in your 15 December issue) will be widely discussed and adopted. Surely the time has come to provide retraining facilities and pay on a scale to ensure that a period of unemploy- ment is something to be sought after by enterprising and ambitious workers. We can then perhaps see the pool of unemployed being the elite of the work- ing population rather than the human scrap heap.
