The Minister of Housing and Local Government, it appears, has

vetoed the sensible proposal that the old Temple Bar be re-erected at the bottom of Middle Temple Lane, on the ground that the nineteenth-century buildings behind it would form an unfortunate setting. He suggests instead that it be erected in one of the reconstruction areas—twentieth (or at the present rate twenty-first) century buildings being no doubt more con- gruous with it.
