Rumanian request

Sir: 'Spectators for Rumania, Poland and Eastern Europe' is a wonderful project which is much needed. I have continual contact with Rumania, travelling, staying and living as a Rumanian whenever possi- ble; and besides the poverty and neglect I have found despair that has led to mass depression.

To see this depression amongst the edu- cated professional level is sad. Their warmth, kindness and beautiful manners leaves me feeling humble. To be received with such courtesy, kindness and spontane- ity is poignant; they need more than ever our support. They need the stimulus of intelligent contact with enlightened minds.

Imagine then the joy of receiving The Spectator on a regular basis. Believe me, projects like yours are very worth while; to be in possession on a weekly footing of such informed and stimulating erudition can only be a force for good.
