Happily the men who go out in drafts after only

three months' training, and are such very new wine poured into such very old bottles, seem to do just as well, and are just as steady in action, as the oldest of old soldiers. In truth, we are finding that a great cause and a noble determination afford the best receipt for making a soldier. As Cromwell said long ago, if you want to beat your enemy you must get " men who make a conscience of what they do." But this is exactly what our men do, though of course they do not boast of it, and would probably not admit it even at the point of the bayonet.
