Touché

Sir: Paul Johnson's ravings (And another thing, 22 July) are most illuminating. He is clearly in favour of a Labour government, but that is hardly surprising from a former editor of the New Statesman.

My recollection of his decision to stop writing for the Daily Express is that he left to go to the Daily Mail for more money.

If he had read the Observer article clearly, he would have realised I was not quoted as saying, 'It was the Express wot won it for Major.' That was the work of an Observer sub-editor. However, I do agree with him that my wife, Eve Pollard, has brains, style and guts.
