From Mr Andrew Neil Sir: The more open and honest you are with Stephen Glover, the more he peddles his own fantasies. I told him categorically that there had been no approach from either Trinity Mirror or David Murray (owner of Glasgow Rangers) to buy our newspapers. I even explained that any thoughts S.G. Warburg had on the matter were unauthorised by Trinity or ourselves and had been dismissed. But he was deter- mined to ignore the truth for the sake of filling a page with unsubstantiated drivel.

Mr Murray has authorised me to tell you the following: 'I [David Murray] categori- cally confirm what Andrew Neil has already told The Spectator: I have not made a bid for Scotsman newspapers, I am not preparing a bid for Scotsman newspa- pers and there is no intention on my part to buy them. What Stephen Glover wrote was incorrect and irresponsible rumour- mongering.'

For our part, - Press Holdings states categorically and for the avoidance of fur- ther doubt that it has received no offers to purchase any or all of its titles, that it has not retained any advisers in this matter, has had no discussions with third parties, and is unaware that any group has any interest in making an offer.

We are proud of all our titles (Sunday Business, The Scotsman, Scotland on Sun- day and the Edinburgh Evening News) and intend to continue to invest in them for the long-term future. We are also sufficiently encouraged by the success we are now enjoying with our existing stable of titles to be in a position to consider expansion by acquisition in the future if the right oppor- tunities present themselves.
