The Times of Tuesday published a powerful letter from the

Bishop of Pretoria showing that the men at the front do not think that they are receiving enough support from home in the provision of high-explosive shells or of men for the trenches. Their famous cheeriness is due to the fact that their consciences are clear, because they know that they are doing all they can, and have unquestioningly made up their minds to the great sacrifice. But the nation, the Bishop says, is allowing thousands of lives to be thrown away because it does not ace as though it were really at war. The only solution, he believes, is for every man at home to be brought under the direct orders of the State for one purpose, and for one purpose only. We should like to say more about this excellent message to the nation were it not for the odious use which has been made of it by the Daily Mail. It has been used to bolster up the personal attack on Lord ICitehener- an end which, of course, it was never intended to serve.
