Shorter Notice

The Oxford Companion to American Literature. (Oxford Uni sity Press. 28s.)

THIS fellow volume to the Oxford Companion to English Lit era will be found indispensable as a work of reference. As far as English reader is able to test it this book has proved infallible; fairly bristles with unknown names as well as including all and present American writers familiar to a European student American literature. The synopses of novels and plays are a done, although they might occasionally be briefer ; the critiques for the most part, sane, judicial and comprehensive. The juel ment on Melville's Pierre, for example, is much fairer than that the Encyclopaedia Britannica. There is a very good appraisal Gertrude Stein, while all necessary biographical information living American novelisti such as Erskine Caldwell, Hemingw Faulkner, Ruth Suckow, may be found here together with a f bibliography.
