COUNTRY LIFE

How easy it is to put things off until they become appalling tasks. About seven weeks ago I noticed the dandelions in the plot beyond the cottage. I had thoughts of trying the little walk-:behind tractor on them, but something distracted me. I think I was looking for our lost cat or watching a pheasant in the wOod down below. Anyhow, told myself, the tractor is no good on such light soil. The second time 1 thought about dealing with the dandelions was when they were in full flower. I looked at them one Sunday and postponed the tas because the bees were doing so well on them; it salved my conscience as long as I forgot that the bees were also guaranteeing the fertilisation of the seed. A week ago I visited the .plot again. Most of the dandelions were downy-headed. The last momeat had arrived. began work with the burning ,apparatus. It took far longer than I ha expected and once over was useless, for thp shrivelled heads seede on the ground. I did what 1 could on my second visit, but then it rained and a wind blew. The wind has taken the eyesore away, but the thought of next year's crop makes me sigh.
