The Queen's Shilling : a Soldier's Story. By Captain Arthur

Griffiths. (H. S. King.)—The reader is led to expect the story of a private sol- dier, who does receive, we understand, some coin of mystical power, which is called the "Queen's Shilling." Instead of this, he finds that the hero of the tale is an officer, much like other heroes, with the regu- lation good-looks, courage, and cleverness. There is not much about soldiering in the story. The hero sees some service in the Crimea, and distinguishes himself in New Zealand,—this is perhaps the best part of the book, which is for the most part occupied with love-making of a somewhat common-place kind, and with a mystery, not very cleverly contrived, involving the succession to a title and estates. On the whole, however, The Queen's Shilling may be pronounced a fairly readable story.
