There were serious riots in Cairo and Alexandria last week

as the outcome of the violent Nationalist agitation. A British officer was murdered in a Cairo street. The Ministry of Mahomed Said Pasha had resigned, by way of protest against the appointment of Lord Milner's Mission, and its resignation was accepted. Lord Allenby acted promptly and firmly. British troops restored order. The two leaders of the Nationalist Executive in Cairo were told to go to their country estates. As they refused to go, they were arrested next day. A new Ministry was formed under Yussuf Wahba Pasha. It is clear that the agitation is closely connected with the ill. famed Committee of Union and Progress at Constantinople, which is using every effort to prevent Turkey from paying the just penalty for her many crimes. The delay in settling the terms of the Turkish Peace Treaty—a delay mainly caused by the political turmoil at Washington—is giving a temporary advantage to the Turkish schemers. When Turkey's fate it settled, the unrest in Egypt will subside. Nothing is so fats; to good government in the East as any display of hesitation or uncertainty.
