The Government, in our judgment, are to be heartily congratulated upon the promptitude, the discrimination and the clearness with which they have acted. The results have been extremely satisfactory. In a case like this where the danger is far too great for the indulgence of mere " finessing " results are the testa Our experienced representatives in Egypt, wisely inspired by the Government at home, have made no mistake. It is easy to say, as opponents of the Govern- ment have been saying, that this or that demand made upon Egypt is unnecessarily harsh or inopportune. We do not believe it. Nevertheless, we hold that it is a matter of prime importance to keep ourselves right with the world, even though many of the foreign objections to our action are bred of ignorance or prejudice. We have explained in our first leading article the invaluable part which the League of Nations might be made to play. We shall not have wholly succeeded with our present policy if we do not pluck out of the present evil the future benefit of intensifying the peaceful atmosphere of the world.
