China

The news from China is better than any there has been for a long time. Chiang Kai-shek has unquestion- ably defeated the Northern combination, and his Execu- tive at Nanking has declared that a permanent Con- stitution will soon be promulgated. Feng

the Christian General, who has enjoyed a great reputation as a leader and trainer of men, is giving no trouble at present, and his ally Yen Hsi-shan is said to have retired formally from the contest. These changes are in the main due to the action of Chang Hsueh-liang, the Manchurian leader, who, after raising the hopes of the Northern combination, came down on the side of Nanking. One of the best signs is that Chiang Kai-shek (who recently became a Christian) frankly recognizes the failures and weaknesses of the Kuomintang system.
