Not that the incompetence of the Dallas police hasn't left the affair wide open to just the sort of theory about some vast and complicated frame- up in which conspiracy-maniacs delight. The nastier voices from the Soviet bloc are already speaking of Oswald as a Van der Lubbe. This, indeed, is a two-edged remark, as it gradually becomes clear that the Communists, like the Nazis, have propagated a myth about the Leipzig Trial (at which, incidentally, Dimitrov firmly denied Communist responsibility for the Sofia Cathedral. murders, only to admit it in 'a speech in 1948--both versions can be seen in the English collection of his speeches). It is the mythologising of just this sort of case which has long provided a good deal of the factitious political energy and emotion in 'world politics: the Reichstag, the Moscow Trials, Katyn, the Rosenbergs.... But there seem real resemblances between Van der Lubbe and Oswald—if, as appears, they were both lone 'fanatics of eccentric views .acting out. their own horrible fantasies.
