Letters to a Poet

SIR,—I have read Quoodle's notes (Spectator, Octo- ber 15), including one on my sister. The reason that he does not feel so irritated by stupid letters is that he is, if I am not mistaken, a politician and not a poet. Poets by the nature of their work have to develop very thin skins, whereas politicians, on the other hand, have to thicken theirs. There is also the question of vote-gaining and vote-losing, neither of which applies to a poet. Let me say here, however, that I appreciate Quoodle's good humour and at the next election my vote will not be affected.
