The 'shadow'

Sir: If Christopher Booker wishes to use Jungian terms, he should try to use them Correctly. In his review of John Fowles's two books (15 October) he claims that the shadow' represents 'the powerful but rootless and therefore ambiguous ordering Principle'. I am afraid it does nothing of the sort. The Jungian 'shadow' represents the ,Imacknowledged, repressed, unexplored .dark' side of the individual's personality. It Isn't all bad, for it may also contain spontaneity and creativity. But it is unconscious —until, through inner work and effort, it can be made conscious and incorporated in the total self. Ordering principle it certainly is not.
