One of the first boys to scare the hell out of me was a tall, broken-nosed student by the name of Teddy. Even at that tender age he was already over six feet and that, cou- pled with the broken nose, was enough. He was a pussy cat, however, and we are friends to this day. His name is Baron van Zuylen, and he is the best friend of Jimmy Goldsmith and John Aspinall. His sister is married to Guy de Rothschild, head of the French clan, and he owns a castle in Hol- land that puts Buckingham Palace to shame.

One of the first beatings I got was when I cheered while a newsreel showed some past German victory. When my parents arrived for the first visit after a couple of months, I was in bad shape. My father thought it was no bad deal and it wasn't. Although Batista, Van Zuylen and Harry Theodoracopulos blended in with the rest of the students, they didn't shine on the athletics fileld, which back then was the answer to all one's problems.

Last weekend I went up to Connecticut where my little John-Taki is boarding for the first time. It is a special school for dyslexics, one with wonderful sporting facilities. Four soccer fields, two indoor
