Twelve British merchantmen over 1,600 toms and two smaller vessels

were sunk last week by mine or submarine. The week before nine large and eleven small vessels were lost. A British destroyer was sunk by an enemy submarine in the approaches to the Channel. Fifty of the crew were saved. In view of the risks that our patrol:, run daily and nightly, the immunity that they enjoy is remarkable. This unfortunate destroyer was a rare exception to the rule.
