The Lib-Lab pact

Sir: A few Labour spokesmen, to their lasting credit, would have preferred the Government to be defeated rather than risk their party being compromised. There must be many more life-long Liberals who regret that their MPs failed to take the opportunity of freeing the nation from an administration controlled, from without, by extremists. It will not be surprising if moderate electors who previously supported the Liberal Party. come to the conclusion that : 'A merciful providence fashioned them hollow, On purpose that they might their principles swallow!'

(J. R. Lowell, The Big/ow Papers. Series 1, No. 4.) (Revd) J. L. Peace 33 Victoria Avenue, Bournemouth Sir: Spring has seen the arrival of a new political animal, the Lib-Lap dog.

If is of course mongrel, indeed it seems to have sprung from a back-street mating, and has inherited the faults of both parents, chiefly a lack of courage, refusing to fight when challenged, and a tendency to break into spells of long and irritating yapping.

Its colour, an unpleasing orange, is likely to prove less popular than that of the blueor red-coated variety.

As a novelty it has aroused considerable attention, but it is most unlikely that a sufficient number of. fanciers will be attracted to the breed to let it survive long. J. M. Worton 3 Stainton Road, Ecclesall, Sheffield
