Paupers' pleas

Sir: 'Rave reviews and true music drama' (Arts, 19 March) are mighty fine things but not fine enough to overcome the fact that the prices at Covent Garden are too bloody high for most people. You can't book a seat with a clear view of Katya for less than £32, the stalls are £90 and the grand tier will set you back £108 per person. Rupert Chris- tiansen should borrow some of Mr Auty's

splendid belligerence and start his own 'Old Prices' campaign. It worked well enough in 1809 and might do so again, though it might imperil his receipt of free tickets in the future.

He might be right about the lumpen ele- ments of public taste, though. After all, if you want to know what God thinks about money, look at the people He gives it to. Simon Wills
