Further point missed

Sir: Geoffrey Wheatcroft misses the point (Letters, 25 November). Yes, the late Brian Lenihan did approach 'his sometime party colleague' President Hillery in 1982 to ask him not to disolve the Dail.

But Lenihan got nowhere. The (by then) apolitical Dr Hillery ignored him. The pres- ident granted Garret FitzGerald's request for a dissolution.
