Manifest tosh

Sir: My father was British Consul-General in Nice in 1940. When France fell, he felt it was his duty to drive the Duke of Windsor to Spain lest he should be captured by the Germans. He did so (though he was later reprimanded by the Foreign Office for deserting his post).

My father always told me that the Duke was very apprehensive on the journey, not only with the natural fear of being caught by the enemy, but more because he was afraid the Germans would use him as a hostage at a time when Britain was in grave danger.

This hardly accords with the manifest tosh promulgated by Channel 4 in its pro- gramme The Traitor King.
