Warmer Northern Cyprus

Sir: Michael Church (`The republic the world forgot', 25 November) is right to sug- gest that there are reasons beyond politics for bringing Northern Cyprus out of the cold, but his article won't encourage any- one to go there.

It is a land of great beauty, with its range of spiky mountains and its empty coast. It also has layer upon layer of archaeological sites and buildings from the Stone Age to Byzantine and Venetian. Unfortunately many buildings — particularly churches are being destroyed through decay, vandal- ism and lack of resources.

To preserve its beauty, Northern Cyprus needs more tourists of the right sort those who are interested in art and natural beauty, and are prepared to make a fuss about damage and neglect.
