LONDON JOINT-STOCK BANKS.

The following table exhibits, approximately, the progress that joint-stock banking has made in London during the past year : we cannot show it with perfect exactness, because all the banks do not make up their accounts to the same period ; the Union of London and the Commercial Bank issue a de- tailed balance-sheet on the 30th June, but not on the 31st December. The first column in the table exhibits the paid-up capital at the present time : inaccurate accounts have recently been current, and the table in our Sup- plement of the 5th January was incorrect in that respect. The second and third columns represent the deposits and reserve-funds on the 31st Decem- ber 1864 at regards four of the banks-on the 30th June of the same year as respects the Union Bank and the Commercial Bank. The two succeeding columns represent the same items one year later, except that the London and County totals are up to June last; the meeting at which the accounts to December will be presented is not to be held till next Thursday. The sixth column gives the total assets in the last accounts before us. The City Bank commenced business on the 6th of August last ; at a meeting on the 29th of last month it was resolved to apply for powers to in- crease the capital by 700,0001.; to be paid up as deemed necessary. The Bank of London began business on the 22d of August 1855. These banks have not yet laid accounts before the shareholders ; but report speaks fa- vourably of their progress, and the Gazette returns show a considerable amount of deposits. The proprietors of the Royal British Bank intend to increase their subscribed capital to 600,000!.; 300,000/. of which is to be paid-up ; the first lot of new shares, 1000, are to bo issued at 51. premium per share.

Mr.- Gilbert, in his Paper read last year before the Statistical Society, ex- hibited the progress of the London Joint-Stock Banks in ten years : taking the totals in the above table, we can now carry it a year farther. In 1845 there were five banks ; in 1855, six ; now there are eight, besides two more about to commence business.
