Meanwhile, the situation in Austria, which involves that of Italy,

remains as threatening as before. The reactionary re- script we quoted last week has produced in Hungary nothing but indignation. The fifty-two counties have unanimously de- manded the Constitution of 1848. One, Gran, tells the Kaiser, in language utterly unlike any ever heard upon the Continent, that the " wrongs of Hungary cry aloud to Heaven," that the Hungarians have contended for their freedom for a thousand years, that they will never give in, and that all his acts for the past twelve years have been illegal. They add, that the Empe- ror must live in Hungary—a new demand, which would change the whole position of the Austrian empire. It would seem cer- tain that, if the Cabinet at Vienna terminates the discussion by all-appeal to force, the Hungarians will rise. The General As- sembly for the remainder of the empire is about to meet at Vienna ; but it is believed that the representatives will concede nothing. It is added, as a sign of the times, that in every emeute in the German provinces of Austria, the rioters now cry for union either with Prussia or Bavaria.
