NEW CHAIRMAN OF THE G.W.R.

ALTHOUGH it is true that Sir Robert Horne is already a director of many important companies, I consider the directors of the Great Western Railway have acted wisely in electing him as the new Chairman in succession to the late Viscount Churchill. Sir Robert Horne is a man of considerable business ability and also of business drive, and provided that due attention is given to the managerial posts continuing to be filled by well qualified men and every encouragement given to them in the matter of initiative, I think that Sir Robert Horne possesses just the qualities which should be helpful to the Railway industry—and I am thinking particularly of Railway shareholders—in dealing with some of those problems affecting Railway profits which are not, perhaps, so immediately concerned with the actual practical working of the Railways.
