Waugh on war

Sir: What a remarkable armchair strategist is Auberon Waugh (Another voice, 19 January). Almost everything he has writ- ten in his article, 'Unlikely to be quite such a field day . . .', has turned out, in the event, to be quite wrong. His idea that the Arabs should sort out their own affairs is nonsense and would have put a large proportion of the world's oil supplies in Saddam Hussein's hands. I am sure Waugh is well equipped to speak on these matters having been in the Officer Training Corps at school.

Mr Waugh should stick to his 'silly ass' role, which he does so well in his articles, for example those relating to police activi- ties in connection with drink-driving.
