[To the Editor of the SPECTATOR.] Sta,—I greatly regret the

line you are taking on this question which is one of our greatest social and moral evils as is evidenced by those whose lives are spent in working among the poorer members of the community who can least afford to bet. Generally speaking, the great majority of people who bet do it because they hope to gain something they have not earned by honest labour, or they use their superior knowledge to the detriment of the 'less fortunate person. with whom they bet. I have regularly read the Spectator for many years,. and I could wish you had taken another line.

think Canon Green's case is unanswerable.
