Tailpiece Events succeeded non-events so quickly this week that the

daily newspapers had some diffi- culty in keeping abreast of them. A splendidly optimistic story by Patrick Keatley in the Guardian on Monday, headed 'Premier has talks with Vietcong in view,' which explained how Mr. Wilson was going to confound his critics, was somewhat spoiled by the news story (same day, same page, same column) headed 'Vietcong Reject Mission.'

The headline that filled me with most expec- tation, however, was 'Why Wilson must go' on the front page of Tribune. Pity that the story had not the faintest connection with any of the possible meanings of the headline.
