" A SOLDIER OF FORTUNE."

[TO THE EDITOR OF THE " SPECTATOR.")

SIR,—I have to thank you for a kind notice of my novel "A Soldier of Fortune," which appeared in your issue of May 26th. There is one point, however, to which I should be glad to call your attention. Your reviewer speaks of my heroine as follows :—" Though there are various differences between the famous Dodo and Phyllis Martindale, it is probable that had not Mr. Benson given us the former, Mrs. Meade would not have hit upon the latter." As a matter of fact, this is in no way the case. My story was not only written, but pub- lished in serial form, long before I had an opportunity of reading Mr. Benson's book.—I am, Sir, &c., L. T. MEADE. ibramore, Thurlow Park Road, West Dulwich, May 28th.

[Of course, Mrs. Meade' s answer is final, and we regret that we made the suggestion, which she shows to have been erroneous.—En. Spectator.]
