Provincial bully

Sir: Why must, or why shouldn't, Auberon Waugh now be abolished? ('Why the House of Lords must be abolished', Another voice, 9 February). Abolition might be rather difficult now, but here this week is this dirty-minded bounder of yours asking us in the Spectator to think well of another bounder who is far from entertain- ing and witty — the PM, that English Poujade, that heartless mistress of the cultural and political down-grading of our times, that bounder so insincere in man- ner, voice and mode, who tilts her head, that provincial bully from the North-East. Is everything to be culturally and politically down-graded now? Cabinets included?
